BROOKSTONES RESTAURANT

Woolen mills, powered by water or steam, were essential to procesing raw wool into yarn and cloth, and were a vital part of many communities, employing hundreds of workers and supporting local economies. Here are some fun facts about woolen mills:

  • Early Technology:Woolen mills used machinery like spinners, twisters, skeiners, and looms to wash, pick, card, spin, dye, and weave wool, significantly speeding up the process compared to hand labor.
  • Water Power:Many early woolen mills were powered by water diverted from rivers or streams, making them ideal for rural areas.
  • Economic Importance:Woolen mills were a major source of employment and income for many communities, especially in areas with a strong sheep farming tradition.
  • Historical Significance:Woolen mills played a role in the Industrial Revolution and the development of textile industries.

GONIC MILL HISTORY

FEATURED TENANT BACK HILL BEER CO.

FEATURED TENANT BACK HILL BEER CO.

Gonic Manufacturing was founded in 1859 by Nicholas Varney Whitehouse, after his previous business venture in Gonic, NH, had failed. The high demand for wool uniforms and blankets by the Union Army during the Civil War meant increased the demand for wool. The company used some of these profits to improve the mill's water power and add steam engines. In 1861 a large addition was added to the west end of the mill.

The 1870s saw a drop in the demand for wool, and a warehouse fire destroyed much of Gonic's finished material. After Whitehouse's retirement in 1877 and a weavers' strike the mill closed in 1878. After economic conditions improved the mill reopened in 1880.

World War II saw Gonic Manufacturing fulfilling U.S. Navy orders for blankets and other material, earning it the a "Navy E" award. During the 1940s and 1950s demand was such that the mill was expanded and improved. The 1960s, however, saw a decline in demand, due in part to the increased use of synthetic fibers and textile production outside of New England.

Gonic Manufacturing Compnay ceased operations and closed in 1971.
